Father Carl Tenhunfeld, CP

May He Rest in Peace!

Father Carl Tenhunfeld December 17th, 1928 – October 14th, 2020

Kate Mims and Deacon James Anderson had the opportunity to represent Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center by attending the Mass of Christian Burial of Father Carl Anthony Tenhunfeld C.P. on a very fitting day, the Feast of Passionist founder Saint Paul of the Cross, October 20, 2020. This celebration of Father Carl’s life was held at the beautiful All Saints Catholic Church in the Heights area of Houston, TX where Father Carl served as pastor for 15 years.  The Mass was presided over by His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and concelebrated by several priests of the Archdiocese and the serving Deacon was a long time member of the Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center preaching team, Deacon Patrick Handcock. The homilist Father Tom Rafferty did a lovely job of weaving the teachings of Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Father Carl’s ministry history into the Gospel of Mathew’s Beatitudes. Father Rafferty was able to genuinely create a tapestry of Father Carl’s ministry and life weaved into each of the Beatitudes, including his love for horse racing. Father Carl is known throughout Houston as the Grandfather of the twelve step community of Holy Name Retreat Center from its humble beginnings in 1965 to the current nineteen twelve step meetings each week and several twelve step retreats each year, Father Carl has been a permanent fixture in the minds and hearts of those that have sought and found sobriety thanks to his following God’s call.

In recent years Father Carl has remained active at Holy Name Retreat Center by continually responding to the call to hear confessions on retreats and attending his favorite event each year, the Friends of Bill W. twelve step steak luncheon, he was very fond of the steaks but mostly enjoyed catching up with his longtime friends in the community. He was loved by all and will be missed by all.

It is also very fitting that Father Carl’s prayer card included the Prayer of Saint Francis Assisi, Lord make me an instrument of your peace. We think it is safe to say that Father Anthony Tenhunfeld C.P. definitely was an instrument of the Lord’s peace throughout his 91 years of life and in death, he is born into eternal life. Eternal rest, grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.
