“God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” Saint Augustine

Today is day two of painting the dining room here at Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center. What a joy to work with Jose from our staff and a handful of volunteers. One of the 1,000 choices of white make the room feel clean and beautiful. Ed, Tony, Justin, Megan, Nancy, Robbie and Lucio made an incredible team of sanders, rollers, and edgers. Its almost finished at the time of this writing.

There is something so rewarding about doing something with your hands. Something that changes, maybe just a little bit, the world around you. I bet Jesus loved when he got to help his dad with carpentry or build something himself in those early years, I am sure Mary had him doing all of the ‘to do’ list around the house when he was around. Smoothing the wood of a broken table perhaps.

Today is the feast of Saint Augustine. His story is one of the greatest sinner to saint stories in the history of the church. St Augustine had a major conversion and became a priest, a Bishop, a Saint, and named a doctor of the church.

God works in all of us, is working in all of us. Our sin, our chipped paint, our dark spots, our worthlessness all become one of the 1000 shades of white with His grace.

There is nothing, no one that God cannot brighten and make new. So the challenge this week is to remember that as we go about our week. Seeing everyone we meet not as needing a makeover, but as a potential saint.
