This last weekend I was blessed to be part of the Catholic women’s retreat here at Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center. What a beautiful start to advent!! These woman are willing to put aside the ‘silly season’ and focus their gift giving first to the Lord. It was a ‘humbling’ experience.
The retreat season focuses on the Name of Jesus and his humility on the cross. As we start the season of Advent there is another profound image of Christs’ humility and that is the stable, the manger, the Savior coming as an infant. Jesus came as a human infant, unable to care for himself, feed himself, walk, or talk.
Christ ‘stooped to our level’. As much as we find distaste in this idea of lowering ourselves to the level of someone we believe below us, that is exactly what the Lord is teaching us by His own example.
If we want a profound example of humility we need only look to the nativity scene, the prequel to Christ’s declaration in the garden, “Your Will be done.”
Next week we celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th with a bi-lingual Mass at 7:00 p.m. followed by the exhibition of an original stone from the Hill of Tepeyac and our new devotional candles. The following week, December 19th, Patty leads a woman’s day of reflection for the Advent season. We hope to celebrate advent with you at one of these events.
