Sembra Venerdi’ Santo

April 9, 2020

The beginning of this Holy Week 2020 has been – weather-wise and other wise – somewhat ‘gloomy’ shall we say? When the clouds are dark and low and the rain is steady, Italians will say “sembra venerdi’ santo”: It looks like Good Friday. Interesting how a faith system will inform even a language. The Lord Himself said that the mouth speaks from the fullness of the heart. What is in our heart full of these days and what, or how, are we expressing what lies therein? For the Christian – and particularly the Catholic, I would say, – Good Friday is a time to mourn, there is no mitigation or getting around this deep spiritual reality. You may recall the prophecy of Zechariah (12:10): “And they shall look on him whom upon they have thrust through, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for for an only son, and they shall grieve over him as one grieves over a firstborn.” The prophecy is fulfilled at the Crucifixion of Jesus and the words of Zechariah are recalled in Gospel of John (19:37). The same prophetic words are referenced later in the Book of Revelations. Jesus criticized the Pharisees for their bad timing and misguided intentions (Lk 5:35): “But the days will come, and when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” In this case fasting is an expression of mourning. Can we not say that the Bridegroom has been taken away from us? I believe so in a certain sense. This happens liturgically and symbolically during the Triduum and He has also been taken away physically during this time of imposed social distancing with public liturgies being denied us. Even with all this we must not lose faith that He is…

Reflections from Within

April 9, 2020

We are all created in the image and likeness of God! He is ever present in each one of us! The more attentive we are to His presence the deeper and more intimate we are In UNION with Him! NOTHING will ever separate us from the Love of God! As we begin our Holiest time of the year- The Triduum- May we embrace the "Cross" as we walk with Christ "virtually" but UNITED in heart, mind and soul! There is a mystery and power in our "suffering" - if approached "with the attitude of Christ" .....it becomes a means to keeping us in close union with Him! In suffering we realize our need for our Heavenly Father's healing love! "For in Him, we live, and move and have our being" Acts 17:28 !! We are NEVER alone!! As we celebrate this Holy Thursday - May we be permeated by the love of Christ, and as Pope Francis tells us....."allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us and to graft our life onto the tree of life, which is the Lord's cross"!

Blessings, Love and prayers!

April 8, 2020

If God is for us .... WHO can be against us? He is our rock and fortress - proving stability and always with His loving arms around us! Although we often abandon Him.... He NEVER abandons us! His hand of love is ALWAYS outstretched toward us, even when we stubbornly look the other way!! His gentle voice, patiently and constantly call us TO Him....even when we obstinately refuse too listen! Focus on His presence as we journey with Him this Holy Week to Jerusalem! He is the Way, the Truth and the Life! Allow His loving light to lead our way .... through the Cross and to His Resurrection! Stay the course ....one step at a time!!

Love and prayers!!!!
